HOW IT ALL STARTED

The Oriental Family has played a pioneering role in the incense industry in India with over 130 years of manufacturing that has passed on through five generations. Not only are our incense sticks, attars, perfumes, bakhoors, dhoop sticks and cones extremely popular in India, but we are also a leading exporter to several other countries. Sri Lanka, for instance, is one of our hugest markets and Oriental Mogra which is one of our flagship brand of incense sticks is a household name in the island nation.

THE 4 PILLARS OF THE ORIENTAL HOUSE

"The 350-odd units in our city account for over 70 percent of the country's produce,105 million sticks - a year," says A.S.M. Hussain Rizwan 49, a fourth-generation perfumer and president of the All India Agarbathi Manufacturing Association. His great-grandfather, Attar Syed Omer, was a pioneer in agarbathi manufacturing in the late 19th century, and Rizwan's father was the first to carry this heritage overseas. "In the early days, a mixture of natural herbs, civet extracts and essential oils was put into specially-made charcoal burners to spread the aroma," he says. Understandably, this was tedious and time-consuming and the need for something easier sparked off the prototype agarbathi. "Dasangam paste (made of precious wood, essential oils and herbal extracts) mixed with charcoal and a binding agent called jigat, was ground to a powder consistency. This was then rolled on bamboo sticks to create the first oodubathis, as they were called in those times." he says   -INDIA TODAY, January, 2009.
